My favorite time to visit Yellowstone is in the autumn when the temperatures are cool and the wildlife is plentiful and active. But earlier this year my wife and I realized that our kids have never visited the park in the warmth of the summer months. So we decided to spend our August family vacation doing the Yellowstone tourist thing. Sure enough the park was packed with thousands of sightseers, and we saw comparatively few wildlife. This combination caused long traffic jams even for common sights like elk and bison. Because it was a family vacation and not a photo trip we didn’t get up early every morning to go looking for wildlife. But we tried it a couple of mornings and were disappointed that we saw so little. There were fires along the east border of the park which limited visibility and made the light very unattractive for photography.
On the other hand we did things that we never do like horseback riding and swimming. We stopped to look at many things to which we haven’t paid attention since my wife and I started visiting the park twenty years ago. Even so, I did manage to take a few shots along the way.
